Multicultural groups under attack again
04/16/2009

By Paulette MacQuarrie

This recent article in the Edmonton Sun (Multicultural groups under attack again) makes me wonder if Canada will ever get a multiculturalism minister who understands the appeal to a lot of Canadians of the 'cultural" aspect of multiculturalism?

Not to all, granted, but to a lot of us.

Unfortunately, all too many of our politicians bend over backwards to mollify those to whom it doesn't appeal. So struggling ethno-cultural groups like the Shumka Dancers get the shaft.

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko's conviction on money-laundering and conspiracy charges was upheld by a federal appeals court Friday, a judgment that will keep the long-incarcerated politician in U.S. prisons for at least several more years.

At Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic School in Warren, eighth-grader Liliya Kulyk, 14, and others read over a presentation in language class March 10. The feeling of community and focus on academics and faith draw families from across metro Detroit.

Many of the parents of students at Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic School in Warren are generations removed from Ukraine, but they want their children to know the language, customs and history of their ancestors.

POPULIST WRITERS IN RUSSIAN-RULED UKRAINE (LATE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURY) (April 2009)

Populist ideals, which began to crystallize in Russia and Ukraine following the Crimean War during the reign of the Russian tsar Alexander II, had a profound impact on Ukrainian literature in the second half of the 19th century. The main tenets of Ukrainian populism (narodnytstvo) were federalism, the emancipation of the peasantry, and the recognition of the cultural distinctiveness of the Ukrainian people. Study of the Cossacks induced romantic visions of rebellions against landlords and national oppressors and of the existence of a Cossack republic based on equality and brotherhood.

New site: Authentic Hutsul music from the Carpathian Mountains

Ukrainian music is beautiful. We have all grown up with it; listening to and performing songs, operas, instrumental music, enjoying the acrobatics and gracefulness of the dance, and by passing on the traditions of our parents and grandparents to our children.

Many Ukrainian music groups from Ukraine and the West have for many years successfully attracted our youth with their modernised versions of folk songs, and with their own interesting compositions.
