On May 18th Parliament Hill and the House of Commons was awash in bright colours as parliamentarians donned beautiful traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirts, "vyshyvankas," to celebrate International Vyshyvanka Day.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan today announced that a Cook County tobacco store owner was charged with underreporting nearly $1 million in sales of tobacco products in a five-month period.

With the upcoming elections in the United States, particularly presidential and congressional, Ukrainian American voters should be raising issues of concern with the candidates.  The purpose is to both inform the candidates about those issues and to let the Ukrainian-American electorate know the candidates’ positions. It seems to me that the following issues should be of importance to the Ukrainian-American voter:  

(Chicago)    The annual event marking Ukraine’s independence of January 22, 1918 in Western Ukraine and the unification of eastern and western Ukraine of January 22, 1919, was held at the Ukrainian Cultural Center on January 24.  As in previous years, the commemoration was organized by the Illinois Division of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA).

The Euromaidan Revolution of 2014, also known as the Revolution of Dignity, was centred on Kyiv’s main square, as was the 2004 Orange Revolution.  On the occasion of the first anniversary of the Euromaidan Revolution, CIUS organized a three-day symposium and invited the Ukrainian writer Andrey Kurkov to deliver the 49th annual Shevchenko Lecture, which served as the keynote event of the symposium. Kurkov’s talk, delivered 9 March before an audience of almost 200 at the University of Alberta, was entitled “How Many Maidans Does Ukraine Need to Become Different?”

Since President Obama signed into law the Ukraine Freedom Support Act (UFSA) on December 18, 2014, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) and its Washington, DC public affairs bureau, the Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS), have been monitoring the implementation of the law. Within a framework of advocacy programs in 2014 to promote passage of the UFSA bill that would assist Ukraine in deterring Russia’s invasion and defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, UNIS organized the first in what will most-likely become a series of “Ukrainian Days” advocacy events on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. The intent of “Ukrainian Days” was to promote the Ukrainian community’s concerns about the slow, if not negligible, implementation of the law, as well as to establish better contacts with its elected representatives in Washington.

Evidence of the direct intrusion of foreign military forces into Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the Alliance was still willing to consider Ukrainian request to join the Alliance and decide whether the country posesses compliance with all the criteria for NATO member states. He also expects certain decisions to support Ukraine on the meeting of the foreign ministers of NATO member countries on December 2-3. Stoltenberg said that Russian actions in eastern Ukraine undermined the Euro-Atlantic security.
