Ukrainians in Chicago protest against the actions of President Yanukovych

Julian Kulas

Ukrainian-American are deeply disturbed by the current events in Ukraine following the recent election of Victor Yuschenko as its president. The new administration has changed Ukraine's direction, pushing away from a European-style democracy to a semi-authoritarian style influenced heavily by Russia.

We condemn the extension of the lease for the Russian naval base in Crimea to 2042 as it a

blatant violation of the Ukrainian constitution and serves as a barrier for Ukraine's entry into

NATO. Russia's continued and extended military presence in the Black Sea is not in the best

national security interest of the United States.

We condemn the attention of the lease for the Russian naval base in Crimea to 2042 as it is indirect contradiction of the Ukrainian constitution and serves as a barrier for Ukrainian addition to NATO. Russia's continued and extended military presence in the black sea is not in the best national security interest of the United States.

We condemn the actions of President Yanukovych in maneuvering Ukraine toward apposition of total dependency of Russian energy supplies thus threatening Ukraine's security and its existence as a free and independent state.

Title

We deplore a recent censorship of Ukrainian media and press as it violates the basic principle of free speech provisions of Ukrainian constitution and international covenants.

We deplore the appointment of Dmutriy Tabachnyk as minister of education and anti-Ukrainian who has been promoting incorporation of Ukraine into a new Russian empire.

We deplore the total disregard of the constitution of Ukraine by the current administration and the judicial branch of the government as demonstrated in their recent decision in the formation of the majority block in the Ukrainian parliament.

We deplore the government's consent to erect statue of Joseph Stalin, a tyrant who is responsible for the Ukrainian genocide during 1932-1933 killing ten million Ukrainians by the artificial famine known as "Holodomor".

 Title

We call upon the United States government to remind Russia that incorporating Ukraine into a new Russian empire will not be tolerated. Ukraine has given up it's nuclear weapons in exchange for guarantees by the United States of its independence and territorial integrity.  Now is the time to step up to the plate.
