The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is pleased to present the museum’s second collaboration with the Bauhaus Chicago Foundation «CUBISM COLLAGE CYBERGRAMS CONCRETE: 4 Artists from Moholy-Nagy’s School». This new school, directed by former Bauhaus Master Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, began a powerful and dynamic new chapter within Chicago’s art, design and educational community. The four gifted artists exhibited here, Alexander Corazzo, Gretchen Schoeninger Corazzo, Robert Nickle and Tadao Takano, are among many from Moholy-Nagy’s school whose work has received only rare exposure to a broad public audience.

Every family has its secrets. Richard Hollander’s remained in an unopened suitcase for fifteen years after the death of his parents. Inside, he found a collection of Swastika-stamped letters written during World War II by a family he never knew – his late father Joseph’s mother, three sisters, their husbands and children. Unable to convince the family to leave Poland, Joseph escaped to the United States where he fought to save his family from annihilation at the hands of the Nazis, and to avoid deportation and death himself. Richard collected his family’s letters in his book, Every Day Lasts A Year, the inspiration for this frequently chilling, often humorous, and always deeply moving drama, staged by Artistic Director Barbara Gaines. We come to know three generations – their hopes, fears and fates revealed – in a compelling journey of the human family and the primal need to understand those who came before.

Sexism continues to pervade the art world; male artists still garner the highest prices for their work and are disproportionately represented in exhibitions. In a challenge to the boys’ club sensibility that has historically shaped abstract painting, the eight female painters featured in the exhibition, which is named after the feminist hardcore punk movement that began in the 1990s, achieve mastery, innovation, and chutzpah in their brash and exciting paintings – without seeking external validation.
In an effort to counteract inequality in the art world, the MCA consciously collects important work being made today regardless of its perceived value on the market. Riot Grrrls presents pioneering painters Mary Heilmann, Charline von Heyl, Judy Ledgerwood, and Joyce Pensato, as well as a younger generation of artists, including Molly Zuckerman-Hartung and Amy Feldman.

In anticipation of fall 2017’s new permanent display of architecture and design works in the Modern Wing, this exhibition presents highlights from the Art Institute’s collection as three provocative episodes or vignettes: the modern chair, the emergence of postmodern design, and contemporary identity systems in graphic design.
The first section is devoted to the modern chair, one of the most popular and enduring design types. Iconic examples by Charles and Ray Eames, Rudolph Schindler, and Charlotte Perriand demonstrate the fusion of form and technology over the course of the 20th century. In the second suite of works, pieces by the radical Italian group Memphis and architectural firm Coop Himmelblau exhibit a distinctly exuberant yet critical embrace of color, pastiche, and history common to postmodern design in the 1970s and ’80s. The final section explores the multiplicity of contemporary graphic identity systems developed to help brand and promote the work of commercial and cultural clients.
