Canada's national Ukrainian Festival signs Ruslana for this year's show

DAUPHIN, MB - Canada's National Ukrainian Festival (CNUF) is announcing the signing of internationally-acclaimed vocalist Ruslana to perform on Sunday night of the 2009 edition of the festival, taking place July 31- August 2. Ruslana has won many awards worldwide including Peoples Artist of Ukraine in 2004 and a World Music Award as the Best Selling Ukrainian Artist at an awards event in Las Vegas, USA that same year.

Galicia - Semi-biographical book by Australian author

I have written a semi-biographical book called "Galicia" based on my parents and my own experiences and documents left to me by my father Dr. Ivan Mamtschak. The book is set in a historical perspective starting at the very origins of Ukraine, of World War I and II. It describes our living conditions under the Soviet and Nazi occupation with pertinent documents, maps and photographs to substantiate the story. The book traces the steps of our escape from L'viv the very western part of Ukraine called Galicia to Austria where we lived for five years as Displaced Persons. It traces our escape route through the German concentration camp in Strasshof, our escape into Slovakia and thence into Austria. The book describes our living conditions in Austria as Displaced Persons and our desperate attempts in trying to find a country that would accept us as refugees.

As the economic crisis continues to impact Russia, economist Yegor Gaidar argues that Russia must democratize to avoid serious social clashes. Gaidar, the director of the Institute for the Economy in Transition, describes two options authorities may take to curb protest: wide-scale repression, or democratization. The former could lead to unrest and even revolution. Yet whether Russian authorities are willing or capable of doing the latter remains open to heated debate.

Marco Levytsky The unfortunate comments Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made about Ukrainians in his 1993 book, Blood and Belonging, are a recurring nightmare that never goes away. Most recently, Manitoba's senior cabinet minister, Vic Toews, sent flyers out to his constituents in which he reprinted a couple of excerpts from that book, which included the comments: "Ukrainian independence conjures up images of embroidered peasant shirts, the nasal whine of ethnic instruments, phoney Cossacks in cloaks and boots, nasty anti-Semites;" and, "Somewhere inside, I'm also what Ukrainians call a Great Russian, and there is a trace of old Russian disdain for these 'little Russians.'"

EDMONTON -- Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says comments he wrote about Ukrainians 15 years ago have been misinterpreted by the federal Conservatives. He told reporters after a town hall meeting in Edmonton on Tuesday night that some of the terminology he used was derogatory, but said it was done in an "ironic" manner to describe some of the prejudices about Ukrainian people.

One of the great difficulties of the Mikhail Lennikov case is the shortage of detailed information and direct evidence of exactly what he did - or didn't do - for the KGB for five years. Lennikov, of course, is the failed refugee applicant now seeking sanctuary in an East Vancouver church in defiance of a deportation order over his past employment by the KGB, the notorious spy agency and secret police of the former Soviet Union.

Apparently Russia was offended that it was not included in the Allied commemoration of D-Day last month. La Russophobe empathetically agrees with Russia http://larussophobe.wordpress.com/2009/06/20/editorial-forgetting-russia/: Their behavior in World War II should not have been forgotten. It was so loathsome, vile and contemptible that it must be made to live in infamy right along with the cowardly Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.

To all supporters of M. Lennikov. Just a few words from someone who knew this guy personally in the 80s. He was a very active Komsomol leader of the Oriental Faculty of Far East University in Vladivostok where he studied the Japanese language in late 70s early 80s. No wonder he was invited to join KGB as an officer upon his graduation from the Uni. His representations that he was made to join the service is absolute nonsense, any Russian would confirm you that.
