The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is pleased to present «Sedimented», a 4-person exhibition featuring Chicago-based artists Stephen Eichhorn, Gunjan Kumar, Judith Mullen and Toby Zallman. These artists not only share an interest in the intersection of the natural and the manmade, but the manner in which they create their multimedia works have conceptual and literal processes in common. In different ways, the artists are all gatherers of images and materials – as if a multitude of ephemera and ideas have been loosened from the world around them and collected, settling within the artists’ studios and their works.

Новий рік починаємо з «Гармонії», виставки художника Володимира Ільчишина. Назва виставки співзвучна з бажаннями молодого покоління українців жити в мирі, бути в гармонії зі самим собою та з іншими. Саме слово «Гармонія» має грецьке походження, що означає «домірність», «узгодженість», «стрункість», «порядок».
Молодий живописець вписує у полотно настроєву гармонію кольорів. Нові обрамлені полотна читаються як відкриті до світу вікна українців, що живуть поза межами Батьківщини.
Будучи учнем українського художника Володимира Монастерецького, ще у шкільні роки презентував у музеї свою виставку у рамках проекту «Творче покоління української діаспори». І ось втретє, цього разу як художник-архітектор, Володимир приходить з виставкою «Гармонія».

Freedom or Death

«Freedom or Death» focuses on the revolutionary events in Kyiv, Ukraine in 2014. The film is told from the point of view of Ukrainian-American filmmaker Damian Kolodiy. Kolodiy’s voice narrates the film, which focuses on events in Kyiv, starting with the peaceful demonstrations in support of Ukraine signing a free trade agreement with the European Union. The film examines how those peaceful demonstrations escalate into a violent conflict between Ukrainian activists and the Ukrainian government headed by corrupt President Victor Yanukovych. Through on the ground footage and Kolodiy’s voiceover, the film is a chronological and forensic portrait of how a civil uprising in Kyiv has become a hybrid war with Russia that has had global ramifications.

Sexism continues to pervade the art world; male artists still garner the highest prices for their work and are disproportionately represented in exhibitions. In a challenge to the boys’ club sensibility that has historically shaped abstract painting, the eight female painters featured in the exhibition, which is named after the feminist hardcore punk movement that began in the 1990s, achieve mastery, innovation, and chutzpah in their brash and exciting paintings – without seeking external validation.
In an effort to counteract inequality in the art world, the MCA consciously collects important work being made today regardless of its perceived value on the market. Riot Grrrls presents pioneering painters Mary Heilmann, Charline von Heyl, Judy Ledgerwood, and Joyce Pensato, as well as a younger generation of artists, including Molly Zuckerman-Hartung and Amy Feldman.

In anticipation of fall 2017’s new permanent display of architecture and design works in the Modern Wing, this exhibition presents highlights from the Art Institute’s collection as three provocative episodes or vignettes: the modern chair, the emergence of postmodern design, and contemporary identity systems in graphic design.
The first section is devoted to the modern chair, one of the most popular and enduring design types. Iconic examples by Charles and Ray Eames, Rudolph Schindler, and Charlotte Perriand demonstrate the fusion of form and technology over the course of the 20th century. In the second suite of works, pieces by the radical Italian group Memphis and architectural firm Coop Himmelblau exhibit a distinctly exuberant yet critical embrace of color, pastiche, and history common to postmodern design in the 1970s and ’80s. The final section explores the multiplicity of contemporary graphic identity systems developed to help brand and promote the work of commercial and cultural clients.
