Culture and education are at the center of shaping Ukraine’s national identity and recently have been the targets of conflicts and confrontations in Ukrainian society. These two areas are fundamental to Ukraine’s nation-building process as they represent the values, the customs, and the accumulated knowledge reflected through the nation’s history.

On November 30, 2012,  two  Kyiv Mohyla Journalism School PhD Candidates, Daria Taraday and Anastasiya Hrynko, defended their PhD Theses (Dissertations) in Mass Communications at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy announced the establishment of a two-year Master's Program in Jewish Studies in October 2012.  This initiative was made possible with the support and generosity of James C. Temerty, a friend and partner of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, and Ukrainian-Canadian philanthropist.  Currently, the Program is referred to as the specialty of Judaica within the Department of History.

Kyiv Mohyla Business School launched Ukraine's only MBA program focused on the needs and characteristics of corporate governance and management of the agricultural sector.  Food and agribusiness relate to one of the largest industries in Ukraine and in the world.  The program aims to prepare Ukraine’s executives and managers in the agricultural sector to successfully lead in today's complex food and agribusiness marketplace, and to promote general business management expertise, as well as industry-specific knowledge.

 New York, NY—On Wednesday, August 10, over 100 Ukrainian Americans gathered before Ukraine’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations on 51 Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues) in New York City to protest the severe backsliding of democracy in Ukraine, and to call for the immediate release of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who was arrested and jailed in Ukraine on August 5th.

June 21 marked the 70th anniversary of the beginning of German-Soviet war in which two bloody aggressors, the brown Germany and the red USSR, former allies, clashed in an internecine battle.

It seems that everything is calm in Ukraine. It seems that Donetsk criminal oligarchs who took over the power and misappropriated all the wealth of Ukraine are talking now about European values.

When Canada was merely 24 years old, two settlers arrived from Ukraine. Today, the Canadian census counts 1.2 million claiming Ukrainian heritage.

Leaving Ukraine for Canada 120 years ago was akin to settling on the moon; only the bravest dared. Reaching the prairies, they were unceremoniously dumped where the train track stopped.

Forgive the blunt question, but are the Regionnaires really that dumb? Evidently, yes. The latest bit of evidence for their serial stupidity is the trial of Yulia Tymoshenko. If you haven’t heard, the former Orange prime minister has been charged with “abuse of office,” something that supposedly transpired when she negotiated a gas deal with Russia a few years ago.

Speaking to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on June 21, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych defended the criminal cases launched against former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and twelve ministers from her 2007-2010 government. Together with nine leaders of the fall 2010 anti-tax code protests and ten nationalists who admitted to beheading the monument to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin (a crime of ‘hooliganism’) although they have been charged with blowing it up (which is a charge of ‘terrorism’) the list of Ukrainians persecuted for political beliefs is now over 30 - and growing.

A system of repressions in Ukraine is obviously ready to operate. Yanukovch, certainly, is not Stalin: Stalin robbed banks, while Yanukovych simply stole hats. The level is different. While the entire system is also rotten, the system is certainly there. History shows that such a system destroys its creators as a rule.
