Selfreliance Ukrainian-American Federal Credit Union in Chicago Supports Kyiv-Moyhyla Academy

Selfreliance Ukrainian-American Federal Credit Union generously hosted Dr. Vyacheslav Bryukhovetsky,  NaUKMA chancellor  and president of the Board of Trustees, and Dr. Andriy Maleshevych, dean of the Kyiv Mohyla Law School at a presentation to the Chicago area Ukrainian community on April 10th, 2010.

The gathering of approximately one hundred took place at the meeting hall of the credit union.  The audience eagerly listened to an analysis of the political situation in Ukraine and engaged in a lively discussion.

Heritage Foundation of Chicago Presents Generous Gift to Kyiv-Mohyla Academy

Julian Kulas,  chairman of Heritage Foundation and Chrystia Wereszczak, member of the Heritage Foundation Board, welcomed Vyacheslav Bryukhovetsky, Kyiv-Mohyla Academy chancellor  and Andriy Maleshevych, dean of the Law School at a meeting in Chicago to express support for the mission and work of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in April 2010.

On behalf of the Heritage Foundation, they presented a check in the amount of $15,000 as a show of support for Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and its mission.  To date the Heritage Foundation has supported the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy generously with gifts totaling $156,000.

On July 7, 2010, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine issued Decree № 1353-r, which officially transferred the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) and the National University of Ostroh Academy, Ukraine’s two oldest universities, to the sphere of management of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.  In previous years these universities acted under the formal authority of the Cabinet of Ministers.

In order to provide our membership with service at the highest professional level, Selfreliance Ukrainian American Federal Credit Union employees, committee members and Board members attend various seminars and training session each year. One of the largest of these is hosted by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU), and this year the NAFCU convention took place at Chicago’s Navy Pier July 21-24th.

Washington, DC (UNIS) – What began seventy years ago in Washington, DC on May 24, 1940 with the founding of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, an umbrella representative organization of Ukrainian Americans, was commemorated in an elegant manner on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 in the halls of the United States Congress.  The gala congressional reception was the inaugural event to mark the UCCA’s 70 years of dedicated service to the Ukrainian community.  Other activities throughout the year will include celebrations in communities throughout the United States; a DVD short-history of the UCCA highlighting its achievements since 1940; and, a culminating gala banquet in New York in May 2011.

Ukrainian-American are deeply disturbed by the current events in Ukraine following the recent election of Victor Yuschenko as its president. The new administration has changed Ukraine's direction, pushing away from a European-style democracy to a semi-authoritarian style influenced heavily by Russia.

Editorial- Calling a Spade a Spade
 
The last few weeks have seen an attempt to obliterate the truth of the Holodomor led by a Ukrainian President who, in his eagerness to abase himself before Russia, is willing to distort the truth about the enforced starvation of 1932-33. Yanukovych's statement, made before the Parliamentary Assembly of Europe on  27 April 2010, that it is improper to regard the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people is at variance with the facts and indeed contravenes Ukraine's own law which makes denial of the genocidal nature of  this event a criminal offence. <

The impact of the information age is overestimated. Hollywood's charm remains seductive and all-pervasive. We need feel-good pills, and heroes and villains to avoid problems with meaning. Heinous villains and noble heroes so as to not inadvertently muddle them, and to avoid uncomfortable questions about what we would do. Most importantly, if necessary, we can change channels.
