The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is pleased to present the museum’s second collaboration with the Bauhaus Chicago Foundation «CUBISM COLLAGE CYBERGRAMS CONCRETE: 4 Artists from Moholy-Nagy’s School». This exhibition, curated by T. Paul Young, is rooted in the founding of the New Bauhaus which formally opened its doors in 1937 at the renovated Marshall Field mansion on the near south side of Chicago. This new school, directed by former Bauhaus Master Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, began a powerful and dynamic new chapter within Chicago’s art, design and educational community. The four gifted artists exhibited here, Alexander Corazzo, Gretchen Schoeninger Corazzo, Robert Nickle and Tadao Takano, are among many from Moholy-Nagy’s school whose work has received only rare exposure to a broad public audience.

Writing The Winter’s Tale after completing his great tragedies, this is a new Shakespeare. Unity of time, place and action are hurled aside as we move across Europe – from court to country, from high tragedy to low comedy – in a story that spans fourteen years. A delusional and paranoid king tears his family apart, but the struggle for redemption yields flickers of hope. Initial darkness gives way to joy as Time leads the characters to a shattering conclusion.

Sexism continues to pervade the art world; male artists still garner the highest prices for their work and are disproportionately represented in exhibitions. In a challenge to the boys’ club sensibility that has historically shaped abstract painting, the eight female painters featured in the exhibition, which is named after the feminist hardcore punk movement that began in the 1990s, achieve mastery, innovation, and chutzpah in their brash and exciting paintings – without seeking external validation.
In an effort to counteract inequality in the art world, the MCA consciously collects important work being made today regardless of its perceived value on the market. Riot Grrrls presents pioneering painters Mary Heilmann, Charline von Heyl, Judy Ledgerwood, and Joyce Pensato, as well as a younger generation of artists, including Molly Zuckerman-Hartung and Amy Feldman.

Humanism + Dynamite = The Soviet Photomontages of Aleksandr Zhitomirsky

This exhibition, the first museum exhibition in the post-Soviet world devoted to leading Soviet political artist Aleksandr Zhitomirsky (1907-1993), offers a captivating portrayal of a satirist and loyal citizen who inventively furthered his country’s official causes across a tumultuous half-century – from the Depression era and World War II through the decades of colonial liberation in Africa and Asia, civil rights in America, and even international crises over oil and dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s. Over 100 works – all drawn from the Ne boltai! Collection – provide an overview of Zhitomirsky’s career and methods in photomontage.
